Eristoff asked us to look at their brand guidelines for them. The last time it had been updated was over five years earlier and like many brand guidelines it was a ring bound document with history, strategy and logo usage documentation with a CD in the back containing images and logos.

As they had been launching new flavour variants, to roll this all out again would have proved to be quite complicated and expensive. They did have a basic text based file database for sharing files with suppliers but the front end wasn’t really up to the job. Files could be downloaded but the sitemap and navigation were very limited with no images or thumbnails. Unless you knew the file name you were looking for it was a bit hit and miss.

We came up with an online solution that allowed the user to be engaged with the brand with impactful full screen images on every page. Javascript apps unsure the user is engaged with the content and users can download logos, images, product shots, PDFs, PPT presentations and press releases really easily either individually or as a complete toolkit package.

Because it is all database driven all the guideline documentation it is all completely updateable. The site is easily navigated with each section of the sitemap using a different background image from the ‘Land of the Wolf’ ATL campaign imagery. The product section takes on each flavour variant for its background.

This site went down really well with the client as it allowed all of their suppliers, strategic partners and local offices easy access to all of the brands assets quickly and easily in an inspiring and immersive way.

We pitched for Tourism Ecuador and won the business. The Brief was to be in two phases. The first phase needed to be live quickly with the second to follow up later with more imagery.

Everyone knows Ecuador for the Galapagos Islands, or rather everyone knows of the Galapagos Islands. To get there you have to go through Ecuador, and that is were the problem lies. No one knows what a diverse and captivating place the the country is and tourists use it as a jumping off point for a trip to see Darwin’s playground. There is so much to see and do in Ecuador from Amazing Flora and Fauna to the wild surf and wilder beach parties.

We quickly realised that as Ecuador is such an undiscovered country there weren’t really many good quality images available to us. This is something that we could look in to in the later phases. We presented four routes but the client really bought in to the simplicity of this typography route. The simple approach utilising the colour palette from the logo was rolled out across press, outdoor, digital outdoor and online.

This was a pitch collaborating with the guys over at Fearless Ideas. I was all over this brief as I have had experience working on travel working on Tourism Australia plus my travel photography from my year out gave me great insight.

The problem
Intrepid Travel is one of the world’s leading small group adventure tour operators. They have been offering affordable and sustainable travel to backpackers and flashpackers from all over the world for over 20 years. Their site was in desperate need of an update and overhaul. They were looking for a snappy new site with a decent bespoke CMS and flexibility. They had over 7000 hard coded pages which was hard to edit and not cost effective.

They also wanted to improve SEO and social networking opportunities whilst also speeding up loading times and keep up with technical advances. Also they needed to improve members’ experience and created more inspiring content.

They asked us to create top-line ideas and thinking and show them how we would approach this task. Even though they hadn’t asked for any creative or page designs to be worked it was easier to our concepts in the form of a homepage and a couple of lower pages.

The Solution
Intrepid are all about Real people, Real value and Real life experiences. Our brainstorming, experiences and insights brought us to: Inspiration, Value and Trust. Recommendations from peers would deliver all of these attributes and is the most natural form of real life experiences. It is also what mostly all of us want from the web – transparency.

We decided to base the creative concept for the site around the idea of a community of backpackers. By giving our members a playground to play in we offered them the opportunity to upload their images, experiences, stories and journals and keep in touch with friends and family back home. This would also allow us to develop a relationship with our customers and help them with future travel plans. Many of them are ‘list tickers’ and they would be able to show their visited countries and cities on their profile pages. People thinking of embarking on a trip will be able to read journals, swap ideas and research.

We simplified the navigation and lead the homepage with a full bleed image and snippets from a journal chosen from a database. Javascript dropdowns keep the page minimal allowing the image more real estate. The user then expanded the panel and could explore through the info and view other images from the gallery.

Intrepid are based in Melbourne Australia and have many regional offices. We were up against two local agencies plus two from Sydney. Unfortunately Intrepid didn’t award us with the main task but the did refer us to the London office for future regional opportunities. They were very impressed with our work and our thinking. Reading in between the lines it did seem that the geography of the situation counted against us. Still, all was not lost as there is a strong possibility of a continued relationship with the London office.

Rolls-Royce needed to bring their web presence up to date. Their previous site was created entirely in flash and was out of date. It was a bit too whizzy for Rolls-Royce and needed to be a little more refined and on brand. It was the right time to make these changes, they were launching the new Ghost and it also gave them the opportunity to talk about their new state-of-the-art factory and headquarters at Goodwood.

They gave the task to Partners Andrews Aldridge who put together a small but fantastic team of designers and developers. I was asked to join them for a couple of months in a senior designer role to help to create these pages and bring them alive.

We created a site that truly reflected the quality of the Rolls-Royce marque. It is totally search engine friendly, something that the previous site was clearly lacking. Animations are slick and refined and are created in JavaScript rather than Flash. Using video to enhance the user experience further and exquisite photography the site really brings the quality and craftsmanship of the brand to the fore.

To deepen the experience further we featured many of the craftsmen and women at Goodwood. With expressive black and white photography and a paragraph conveying their passion and vision you really get under the skin of the people who create these incredible automobiles.

I had a great time working on this project. The team I was working with really was first rate. The client was an absolute dream, really collaborative and Partners is a top agency with a great bunch of people.

This HTML email was a proactive piece timed around the clocks going back. Not only would it serve as a reminder to reset your clocks but also acted as a drive to trial.

The idea here was to send this tactical email to existing Dolce Gusto consumers introducing them to a new flavour of coffee they hadn’t tried yet. Clicking on the link would take them to a page where they could redeem their free coffee capsules. They would be sent to them in time for the perfect Sunday morning.

The client loved the idea but didn’t have enough lead time to implement it. They have hung on to it and are planning to roll it out the next time the clocks change.

In September ’08 Titan launched a competition to promote their huge new outdoor space. It is 3m high and 73m long and runs along the busy lines at Euston station.

Nescafe had just launched their collections range on TV and online and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to add to the mix with a free outdoor space on offer. There were also plans to add a large URL and drive to site for online competitions.

It was initially liked but didn’t get the go ahead at the top level.

Soya milk traditionally has a chalky texture. Silk Soya milk has a surprisingly creamy sweet flavour and had been selling well in the US. A behavioural change had been taking place and people were switching to Soya milk as a healthy alternative to milk regardless of whether they had a lactose intolerance or not.

There were plans for a launch in the UK and the client was into our ideas but a business decision was made and the launch and subsequent campaign didn’t materialise.

Global Dividend Fund
This scamp was initially liked. Unfortunately another fund was running an ad featuring two divers. It considered to be too close as they were both underwater. Some might say a tenuous link but some political issues are best avoided.

An alternative route was put forward but in the end the brief was changed. None of these routes saw the light of day.

So what’s on here then?
I think Life caching is what they are calling it these days.

So it’s work stuff mainly. Some portfolio pieces ranging from TV, press, outdoor, online and digital outdoor too. You can also see some travel photography on here too.

I am an all round creative with 20 years experience. These days working mainly in digital with a few integrated briefs thrown in for good measure. Started on the boards and Cow Gum all those years ago. Then became a Designer/visualiser eventually becoming freelance for about 10 years.

I moved in to digital at the very beginning of it all and started to take on a more conceptual role. Grew in to this area and started to think in more integrated way. I moved into a more traditional creative role to sharpen my conceptual skills and now work across all media but online is where my strengths are. I am passionate for beautiful and innovative, interactive solutions.

In June 2006 my better half and I took a year out and went round the world. We took a laptop and a couple of digital SLRs and pretended to be a travel journalists snapping and tapping away. It was a lot of fun, we went to some amazing places with huge wow factor, recharged our batteries and came back inspired ready to take on the demands of London life again. The problem:
Cobra is the UK’s favourite lager – in Indian restaurants. But nobody touches it in pubs, even though it’s more and more available.

The insight:
Cobra’s less gassy than other lagers, so it goes down more easily. That means you can have a few in the pub without that bloated feeling getting in the way of good old fashioned banter.

The solution:
We created an animated campaign that featured three everyday blokes in a pub having a gas-free chinwag. The conversations were ad-libbed from a series of starting scripts, giving it a completely authentic feel. The campaign was illustrated by Simon Spilsbury, and animated by 12Foot6.

The campaign was spread across Cinema,  Idents on the TV channel Dave, Trade and Consumer Press and Outdoor.
